The new Lumos Helmet

It’s not often you get excited about getting a new bike helmet, but in the case of the Lumos helmet I was, and I’ll tell you why.

Back in August 2015 I found out about Lumos through a Facebook link for a company that were looking to raise money via a crowd funding website called Kickstarter. Being one of the early backers I pledged $99, about £75. The way kickstarter works is that the company sets an amount they wish to raise, and you only pay out if they reach they’re target. In the case of Lumos, they smashed it. And the reason why? It’s a ground breaking product.

When you do something like this through Kickstarter they’re needs to be an incentive for the investor. In this case, it was a reduction in price against the rrp. The helmets now sell for $179 plus taxes.

The helmets were due to be ready and shipped back in April of this year, but this timetable slipped as they refined the model to make it better.

Basically the helmet has integrated lights and indicators built into the helmet. You have a wireless remote control that you attach to your handlebars, and press the relevant button to select left or right. When you indicate the button flashes and also gives out an indicator noise so you know it’s working, and to remind you to switch off afterwards. But that’s not all. There is a sensor in the remote control that detects when there is a reduction in speed. If it senses you are slowing down/braking the lights that may have been flashing before on your helmet turn to a solid red, just like a brake light on a car.

You can also control the sensors through an App on your iPhone.

I’ve only had the helmet a couple of days, but tried it out for the first time yesterday on the roads, and you feel a lot more confident and safer on the roads. As well as making you more visual it encourages drivers to take greater care around you.
